CHRISTIAN SPURLING (English, 20th Century) TWO WORKS: SHIPS AT SEA. 1) Oil on illustration board scene shows a tall ship in full sail sailing slightly to the right in an oncoming view in blue ocean with blue and white sky. Signed bottom right “C Spurling 1972”. 2) Oil on illustration board showing a fully rigged and sail three-mast tall ship sailing right to left in blue white capped ocean under blue and white cloud sky. Signed lower right “C Spurling 1973″. The ship has a red cross on one sail and flies the American flag. Both identically housed in gilt wood frames with white and gold liners. In the British army, Spurling was captured at the fall of Singapore and as a prisoner he worked on the infamous Bridge over the River Kwai. SIZE: 22″ x 30”. CONDITION: Very good, some yellowing to varnish. 9-95140 (1,000-1,500)
