There’s an “edge” to Dan Morphy’s Jan. 22 auction of general antiques. The sale features several longtime collections, one of which is a 50-year assemblage of vintage pocket knives. This collection includes a fine assortment of German, English and American knives crafted of bone, metal and mother-of-pearl. Some of the hilts include a late-19th-century Ulster knife, a G. H. Gebr., Hollweg’s patent cam lock ring opener pearl whittler, and a Sportsman knife dating to the late 1890s. Other unusual entries include a 1920s Coca-Cola bartender knife, a “Presto” made by Schrade Knife Co., and a German Gravity knife. The selection is rounded out nicely by a selection of knives by the companies Buck and Case.
Following the knives, Morphy’s will present a seasoned collection of more than 150 pocket watches. Among the manufacturers represented are Elgin, Boss, Waltham and Irvine. The horological section of the sale also features a number of 14K and 18K gold watches, plus a few repeaters in working condition.
The rich colors and whimsical artistry of Bakelite jewelry will be on display in this sale, with highlights including a Witch on Broom pin, a Peppers brooch, an End-Of-Day bracelet, and a large carved Feather brooch. Collectors who seek out Bakelite “arm candy” will find their sweet tooth well satisfied with the excellent assortment of bracelets in a rainbow of colors.
A desirable selection of ivory includes two exquisitely detailed Asian nudes known as “doctor’s ladies” and multiple pairs of ornately carved figures.Part two of an outstanding Arts & Crafts collection consigned to Morphy’s is replete with fine pottery, tiles and textiles. Within the offering are top-quality pieces by Rookwood, Roseville, Grueby and Mosaic Tile Co. Adding European flavor is a collection of steins, including examples of Mettlach and Mustershultz.
All hands will be on deck for the extensive collection of vintage nautical-related items. The grouping includes paper items, signs, models, life rings and many other unique pieces. Some of the key lots include a 10-foot Caronia model ship, and life rings from historical boats such as the Caledonian, the Lusitania and the Meriwether Lewis. The 702-lot auction will conclude with a regal procession of Coronation-related items. The collection includes some beautiful Royal Doulton loving cups, textiles, brass pieces, and early china and tins with images of British Sovereigns and Royal Family members.
