July Advertising Highlights
At Auction: July 17
The Advertising segment of the July Auction leads off with a few strong beer signs-a Vitrolite for Hudepohl and a Robt. Smith Ale tin sign, both in remarkable condition! A few gas pumps and two nice street rods soon follow.
Then the soda starts flowing with Coke trucks and a few very strong condition tip and serving trays. Cardboard posters are sure to catch eyes and bidder interests, again due to super graphics and condition.
Porcelain highlights are led by a scarce large Finck’s Overall’s with pig, Lawrence Paints with tiger, Mayo’s Plug with rooster, and strongly curved Campbell’s Soup, all classic signs and tough to find anytime, especially in these high states of preservation.
For larger areas, we are happy to offer a variety of outdoor porcelain neon and electric signs that certainly evoke the street scene of the 20s to 60s. And sandwiched in the middle of the advertising offerings are two stars of the show. Both are stunning, rare, vibrant, and certainly exemplify the best of their kind- a 1905 tin litho Smith’s Kidney Pills sign and a 1908 cardboard sign. Both items turned up only in the last few years. They make a compelling pair for any collector to consider.
I hope you all enjoy these offerings and wish you all the luck and good bidding in your quests to expand and build a collection you enjoy! Many other fine offerings exist in our July sale that I have not even mentioned here.

MAY 25 DISCOVERY AUCTION
Every collecting category has its own following, but we can always expect the phones to start ringing when we offer long-held collections of antique and vintage dolls. Our May 25 Discovery sale, which is highlighted by two old and important collections of dolls, has kept our staff hopping. These two estate collections – one of which is from Altoona, Pa., and the other from the Midwest – have been held privately for more than 35 years. In terms of antiques in general, that’s a long time to be off the market, and it’s an added enticement to those seeking something well seasoned and truly fresh for their collections.
I expect all of the dolls to do well, especially the German bisque examples. All of the manufacturers’ names that collectors particularly want are represented in this sale: Kammer & Reinhardt, Simon & Halbig, Kestner, etc.
There’s also a very nice selection of Schoenhut, composition and vinyl dolls, all in beautiful condition, and two oil-painted “Hospital” dolls from the premier Rhode Island cloth doll maker Martha Chase.
One of the best dolls in the sale is an example made by Kley & Hahn (K & H, Germany). It’s a 17-inch bisque character doll with jointed composition body, and I expect it to make somewhere in the $2,500-$3,500 price range.
Another doll to watch is the 24-inch German bisque Kammer & Reinhart character baby doll, mold 116/A, with painted upper teeth and jointed composition baby body. We estimate it will bring $1,500-$2,500.
Two novelty items to be auctioned consecutively are a pair of papier-mache parade masks fashioned as animal heads: a hunting dog, which is estimated at $200-$300; and a smiling rabbit estimated at $250-$350.
As always, there’s a nice selection of advertising in the sale. The selection includes a number of tobacco tins, coffee cans, peanut butter pails and a couple of 1940s Coca Cola playing cards in original boxes.
Another single-owner collection consigned to the auction consists of vinyl and action figures. All items from this collection are in near-mint-plus condition. Following a series of Mego figures in original boxes, we will then auction a large selection of mint vinyl figures by such companies as Marmit, Marusan, Bullmark, CCP, Blobpus and many others. Also included are more than 100 Circus Punks in original boxes.
Morphy’s Discovery Auctions maintain the consistently high level of quality that our customers have come to expect from us over the years. I think you’ll be very pleased with the excellent selection we’ve put together for our May 25 sale. Click here to view the catalog.
