Following the overwhelming success of Dan Morphy Auctions’ first-ever Discovery Auction held earlier this month, the company is planning a follow-up event on Tuesday, March 30, 2010, starting at 10 a.m. Eastern Time. The 491-lot auction includes a beautiful selection of antique advertising, highlighted by many colorful 1940s-1950s posters and die-cut signs, including attractive ladies serving Spur Cola. A 63-inch-tall example depicts a cowgirl in white shorts, white satin shirt and white Western hat, holding a tray with two bottles of Spur Cola and two glasses filled with ice. It is expected to make $300-$600 at auction.
An extensive array of Coca-Cola advertising items will be auctioned. A coveted 1931 serving tray with a Norman Rockwell image of a Tom Sawyer-like farm boy enjoying a Coke, with his little dog close at hand, is in near-mint condition and estimated at $600-$1,000.
An appealing collection of painted cast-iron paperweights is entered in the sale. Among them is Hubley production featuring two quail is expected to bring $200-$400.
Within the Decorative Art category, a featured lot is the 18¾-inch-tall Roseville Brown Acorn vase. In excellent condition, it is estimate at $200-$400.
Leading the selection of antique cast-iron mechanical banks is a J. & E. Stevens Dentist bank with crossover African-American theme. In working order, the excellent-plus bank could make $3,000-$4,000 on auction day.
Several toy cap guns and BB guns are to sold. An Ives animated, late-19th-century “The Chinese Must Go” cap gun carries a $600-$900 estimate.
As always, a fine lineup of toy vehicles awaits bidders. The selection runs the gamut from tin windup and friction toys to pressed steel, painted wood and plastic. A perennial favorite, a Metalcraft Heinz Pickle truck, is in near-mint condition and estimated at $400-$700. A collection of several dozen tin airplanes is featured in the toy mix, as well.
